This weekend I heard something funny that seemed to say all you need to know about the mass media. After a report on the stock market that noted that 2002 was the third straight year that the stock market declined, and that this had not happened in 60 years, an anchor on CNN declared, unironically: 'practically apocalyptic.' Yes, global warning, the US declaring that it might use nuclear weapons against perceived foes, those are not big deals. But the inability of this anchor to watch his portfolio grow on paper year after year: that, indeed, is 'apocalyptic.'
