Friday, December 27, 2002 Letter to the New York Times: Nicholas Kristof calls for a worldwide campaign to stigmatize the use of terrorism. Great. But he also notes that the US war against Iraq will 'likely terrorize civilians'. The solution, the only one with real moral clarity, is to stigmatize all forms of warfare, i.e. the use of violence for political ends. First up should be aerial bombing, which has done far more to kill civilians and military personnel over the last fifty years than terrorism. All states and political actors, the US included, must learn that killing people as means to achieve political objectives will be firmly repudiated by the global community. Of course, they dismissively refer to "liberal bastions like Boulder, Colo.; Santa Fe, N.M.; Cambridge, Mass.; and Berkeley, Calif., where opposition to government policy is a tradition", but still...
